Hay Day

Editor‘s Review

Finnish developer Supercell created Hay Day in 2012 and it is now available for playing on mobile. But right now, the game is still quietly going strong, with tens of millions of players logging in every month to enjoy it after nearly a decade of existence. Hay Day's premise is disarmingly simple: you inherit a ramshackle farm, grub out the weeds and stones as you plant a two-minute wheat that matures in real-time minutes on this sort of diet cultivating land into a decayed lush empire complete with bakeries, dairies and sugar mills for a soft pink world where the cones of pastel colored silos stick out like that tea leaf painting where houses rise above treetops as if illustrations on some fairy tale page here they're real things in front of you grown to giants.

The real difference between Hay Day and other farming titles is the elegance of its economy. Everything you harvest, whether cheese ripening on a shelf or an egg laid by a chicken, can be shipped to non-player characters who visit your farm. It can also be sent off in delivery contracts for larger reward and no player visible as well as advertised at the roadside store you control where anyone setting prices are neighbors. Wheat at noon can be worthless yet scarce as diamonds at midnight, promoting organic player-run market structures. During the harvest, rare items such as land deeds and marker stakes pop up out of nowhere requiring you to trade high-level farmers for barn space rather than trade coins.

The neighborhood system, which was established in 2013 and has taken on a life of its own, becomes the centerpiece of many people’s social interaction. Up to thirty farmers can come together to chat, request supplies from one another or participate in Co-operative challenges that last just seven days, tasks like filling 120 strawberry cakes or catching 50 lobsters in less than two hours, all within a given time limit. Teams are awarded points based on their performance in such derbies: these earn them special rewards from fake fountains to stacks of diamonds, Supercell’s in-game premium currency. As players talk over voice chat and discuss issues together using emoji in a small community forum characterized by neighborliness, the player guilds that were created ten months after release are still thriving and close-knit as ever today.

Without question, its monetization is also very light. Diamonds might be used to speed up waiting times or buy premium decorations, but players are always able to recapitulate all the main activities without spending a single cent. Every four weeks, the valley changes into something new and pretty. Halloween corn mazes, winter fields of snow, or cherry blossoms in the springtime. In 2021, Supercell added the Valley as a communal map where hundreds of farms share such amenities as car stations and fishing spots, these winding sunny roads called highways nearby make you feel a bit separated from nature if not general living experience.

Hay Day's cleverest trick may be convincing that a five-minute seedling before breakfast will indeed keep ye sated, but before you know it you are nibbling and planning and charming with neighbors across the world while they sleep somewhere else too and always have an extra screwdriver when yours drops the screw.
