Wuthering Waves

Editor‘s Review

Wuthering Waves approaches monetization and player progression with a philosophy that sets HK KURO GAMES LIMITED apart in the competitive gacha landscape. The game employs the Convene system—its gacha mechanism—where players use Lustrous Tide for limited character banners, Radiant Tide for the permanent standard banner, and Forging Tide for weapon banners. This tripartite currency structure immediately signals the game's economic framework, but its implementation reveals both consumer-friendly innovations and concerning design choices.

The game's most significant advantage lies in its guaranteed pity system and player-friendly rates. Limited character banners feature a 50-50 system at 80 pulls with hard pity, but critically, losing the 50-50 guarantees the featured character within the next 80 pulls. More importantly, Wuthering Waves maintains pity across banners—pulling 70 times on Jiyan's banner carries over to subsequent banners like Yinlin or Changli. This contrasts favorably with competitors requiring fresh pity counts per banner. Additionally, the weapon banner guarantees the featured weapon within 80 pulls with no 50-50 mechanics, eliminating the predatory double-RNG layer found elsewhere.

The Beginner's Choice Convene allows new players to select a standard five-star character—Calcharo, Verina, Encore, Lingyang, or Jianxin—within 50 pulls at reduced cost, providing immediate roster foundation. The game's daily activities reward approximately 60 Astrite (premium currency) through commissions, with weekly Union Level rewards, monthly Lunite subscriptions, and Tower of Adversity providing additional income streams. A free-to-play player can accumulate roughly 40-50 pulls monthly through diligent play, making limited five-star acquisition feasible every two to three months.

However, the progression system reveals concerning resource bottlenecks. Character advancement requires Shell Credits, Character EXP materials, Ascension materials from specific bosses (Mourning Aix drops for Jiyan, Bell-Borne Geochelone materials for Jinhsi), Forgery Challenge materials for skill upgrades, and weapon enhancement materials. The resin equivalent—Waveplates capped at 240 with 1 every 6 minutes—severely restricts daily farming. Ascending a single character to level 90 with maxed skills demands weeks of dedicated Waveplate expenditure, creating a roster expansion dilemma: acquire new characters or invest in existing ones.

The weapon system exacerbates this tension. While five-star signature weapons like Verdant Summit for Jiyan or Emerald of Genesis for Verina provide substantial performance boosts (typically 20-30% damage increases), the separate weapon banner requires additional resource allocation. Four-star weapons from the Standard banner like Rectifier 25 or Sword 18 remain viable alternatives, but the power gap is noticeable in endgame content.

The game's generosity appears contradictory. Monthly events provide substantial Astrite rewards—limited-time events like "Lollo Campaign" or "Depths of Illusive Realm" offer 1000-1500 Astrite each. Yet the Echo farming system requires separate stamina-equivalent (Crystal Solvents) and features RNG layers for both Echo drops and substats, creating parallel progression grinds competing for player time.

Sequence (constellation) systems present another consideration. Characters function at Sequence 0, but characters like Danjin or Yuanwu significantly improve at Sequence 6, obtainable through duplicate pulls or monthly shop Lustrous Coral exchanges.

Wuthering Waves' economy demonstrates player-friendly innovations through guaranteed systems and pity preservation, genuinely respecting player investment. However, the resource bottlenecks and parallel progression systems create friction that may frustrate players seeking broader roster experimentation, revealing design philosophy tensions between generosity and engagement retention.
