Editor‘s Review

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is an action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar Leeds and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on March 17, 2009, for the Nintendo DS, and later on for other platforms including iOS, Android, and PlayStation Portable. The game takes place in the fictional Liberty City and follows the story of a young triad member named Huang Lee, who travels to Liberty City to deliver an ancient sword to his uncle, only to get caught up in a power struggle within the triad.

The game's graphics are surprisingly good for a Nintendo DS game. The top-down perspective allows for a lot of detail in the game's environment, and the cutscenes are well-animated. The game's music is also noteworthy, featuring a mix of original tracks and licensed songs that fit the game's setting perfectly.

Gameplay-wise, Chinatown Wars is a lot like the previous GTA games. The player can explore the open world of Liberty City, completing missions and side quests for various characters. The game's driving and shooting mechanics are both solid, and the game even introduces a drug-dealing minigame that adds a bit of strategy to the game's economy. The touch-screen controls on the Nintendo DS version work surprisingly well, and the game's interface is well-designed.

One of the unique features of Chinatown Wars is its use of the DS's touch screen. The player can use the touch screen to perform various actions, such as hacking into security systems, hot-wiring cars, and assembling weapons. These touchscreen controls feel intuitive and add a layer of interactivity to the game that makes it stand out from other GTA games.

Another unique aspect of Chinatown Wars is its story. The game takes place in the same fictional universe as the other GTA games, but it features a different cast of characters and a different tone. The story is more lighthearted and satirical than other GTA games, which can be refreshing for long-time fans of the series. The game's characters are also well-written and memorable, particularly Huang Lee, who is a likable protagonist with a good sense of humor.

One potential downside to Chinatown Wars is its difficulty. The game can be quite challenging at times, particularly in later missions. This can be frustrating for some players, but it also adds to the game's sense of satisfaction when the player completes a difficult mission.

In conclusion, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is an excellent addition to the GTA series. Its unique touchscreen controls and lighthearted story make it stand out from other GTA games, while its solid gameplay mechanics and the detailed open world make it a worthy entry in the series. Whether you're a long-time fan of the GTA series or a newcomer, Chinatown Wars is definitely worth playing.
